Short Note- Allegory
An Allegory is a story or
description in prose or verse with double meaning– a primary or surface
meaning; and the secondary or under the surface meaning. The secondary meaning
may be moral, religious, political, social or satiric. In allegory the
characters are often
personifications of such abstractions as greed, envy,
hope, charity, fortitude etc.
‘Animal Farm’ written by George Orwell is a great example of
Allegory in literature. Here, the animals symbolize the different sections of
Russian society, where pigs represent the people who came to power after the
time of the revolution. On the other hand, the horse represents the laborer
class and the owner of the farm symbolizes the overthrown Tsar Nicholas II.
